What Is The Difference Between SEO and SEM?

As an online marketing consultant my clients often ask me about the terms SEO and SEM. What does SEO stand for? What does SEM mean? What is the difference between SEO and SEM?

What Is The Difference Between SEO and SEM?When NuZoo Media starts designing a web site some of the first things we think about are SEM, SEO, target audience, message and brand. Our clients are depending on our expertise as online marketing consultants.

SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing and SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.

So What is the Difference Between SEM and SEO?

Search Engine Marketing – SEM

SEM is just that – a marketing plan made to increase the visibility of a web site in search engine results pages (SERPs) through optimization and advertising. SEM is made up of multiple components. One of the components of SEM is SEO.

Another is paid advertising. Also called paid search, these are the ads that pop up first when you do a Google search, and also on the right hand side. These are also called CPC for cost-per-click or PPC for pay-per-click marketing, because most search ads are sold on a CPC / PPC basis. With paid advertising you can send more targeted traffic to your web site.

Social media also plays a part in SEM. Depending on  your target audience and what social media they are using the list is almost endless these days: Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter, Pinterest.

Search Engine Optimization – SEO

SEO is the process of getting organic, or free, listings in the SERPs. When you do a search on Google the results bring up ads, maps, photos, video or local listings. The organic results are listed below the paid ads. The organic results are ranked based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users. There is no payment like the paid search ads.

Successful SEO will help your site gain a higher-ranking placement in the search results. The higher the better because the drop off in page rank is dramatic, according to online advertising network Chitika. Page 1 gets 32.5% average traffic share, Page 2 17.6% and it keeps decreasing from there. The higher your site ranks organically the better the chance you will see an increase in site traffic.

SEO Comes First

Now that you know the difference between SEO and SEM, SEO should be the first step in promoting your site. In fact, a Search Engine Marketing campaign is not complete without SEO and your online marketing consultant will include it. It makes the site better for the search engines and for users.

Some SEO Tips

Here are a few SEO tips you can do to boost your site’s organic ranking:

  • Creating engaging and relevant content using strategic keywords
  • Using keyword analysis
  • Get social media links from Facebook, YouTube and Twitter
  • Build backlinks
  • Create a Google+ account if you don’t already have one

How Do I Optimize Video for YouTube

How Do I Optimize Video for YouTubeWith YouTube now the second largest search engine it’s as important to optimize video as it is to optimize your web site. This is the first of several articles that addresses what you should be doing to optimize video.

What are the most important things to do to optimize video?

Video Content

Produce high quality content that is engaging and informative. Your videos should answer questions, educate, entertain or solve problems. My SOHO Today Show addresses issues geared to small business owners and entrepreneurs, like getting started, marketing and technology. Our Wedding Weight Loss Fast channel offers up exercise, nutrition and clothing tips.

Use Google Trends for YouTube

Google Trends for YouTube allows you to see the popularity of your targeted keywords. Google Trends for YouTube also suggests similar keywords that also have substantial search volume. Staying on top of your keywords will help optimize video for YouTube.

Video Name

Your video name should be descriptive of the video content. Don’t name your video 73jdoo.mov, name it mortgage-application-tips.mov.

Video Title, Description, Key Words

These three are often overlooked but are very important to optimize video. Just like your web site you should be using keyword rich descriptions that are detailed and informative. Your video title should tell the viewer exactly what the video is about. Keep your title to less than 66 characters.

Your description can be up to 800 words. Make the description engaging and informative. Make sure to use your keywords throughout the description. YouTube search results show only the first 25 characters so include your primary keyword(s) first, followed by several sentences that are creative and tell the viewer exactly what the video is about.

Embed the YouTube Video on Your Web Site

You can also share it on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest and your email blasts.

What is Search Engine Optimization and Why Is It Important?

What is Search Engine Optimization and Why Is It Important? You’ve all heard the term SEO. But what exactly does it mean? And why should SEO be so important to you?

So, What is Search Engine Optimization?

SEO stands for search engine optimization. SEO means optimizing your web site to get organic, or free, traffic from search engines like Google and YouTube.

The search engines send out crawlers to go through web sites and index web site data. Google’s crawler is called GoogleBot. These crawlers go to web sites and then follow links throughout your site and then send that data back to the search engines. Think about a crawler working the same way you do when you surf a web site and click from link to link.

When you optimize your web site you are making it easier for the search engines to crawl your site, and index and categorize your web site content.

Search engine optimization is important because this is how the search engines find your web site, how your site gets displayed on search engines like Google, and how people find your web site.

Important SEO Best Practices

Page Titles, Page Descriptions and Page Content Should Be about the Same Thing

Have page titles and descriptions and page content that are relevant to each other. Your page title and descriptions should accurately describe what the page is about. This page is about search engine optimization  and why it’s important. My page title is What is Search Engine Optimization and Why Is It Important? My page description is SEO stands for search engine optimization. SEO means optimizing your web site to get organic, or free, traffic from search engines like Google and YouTube. Both of these page elements are about this article.

Internal Links

Link to your own pages. Link related articles together by using key words that are about both articles. For example I am linking the headline Important SEO Best Practices to a case study on search engine optimization. And below under Sitemap I am linking XML sitemap to NuZoo Media’s XML sitemap.

Content is King

Provide relevant content in short, easy to read paragraphs. Whatever your page title is your article should be about it. If someone does a search on Google and comes to your site but that page ends up having nothing to do with their search they will leave immediately.

Sitemap

An XML site map will help the search engine crawlers index your web site, and also make it easy for users. Link the sitemap from the main menu.
